I’ll be honest. Felicity or Sissy as we call her, is my niece. And if you follow my facebook page, (Simply Shelayna Newborn Photography) you will see numerous nieces and nephews pop up in my business feed, a lot. Why? Well, those sweet little ones need their portraits updated too, and Aunt Shanie (that’s me!) is going to get it done.
As an Oswego NY Child photographer, I love to capture little tikes on the move. At two-years-old, these kids have a mind of their own, and Sissy is no exception. Our portrait session was impromptu. We had no planning, no special outfits, and no props. But as we know in life, some of the best memories come when we do things on the fly!
So, I was babysitting Sissy and her big brother Remy for almost a full day. Remy had gone down for a late nap and I was watching the sun starting to set in a gorgeous glow and I didn’t want to miss it. So, I snagged a shoeless Sissy and put her out in my backyard and hoped for the best.
Sissy was not amused. She kept looking at me like, “Why, Aunt Shanie, why?” It was more of an upset glare to be exact. But I know the best way to get a toddler smiling is to let them move! Exerting what energy I had after babysitting for 6 hours, I grabbed Sissy by the hand and ran her back and forth. And I got her gave me more than smiles. She was running and twirling and laughing. The sun caught her golden hair as she spun her summer dress around and around. It wasn’t planned. But it was perfect.
Don’t be afraid to take a moment and capture your babies. Even if they aren’t dressed picture perfect. Take a few minutes and capture the moment. You will never regret it.
